Microsoft to license two WiFi technologies

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Microsoft said it is now offering intellectual property (IP) licenses to two WiFi-related technologies invented by its Network Research Group. Microsoft said the two technologies have enormous commercial potential. The software company plans to license its IP to Radar, an indoor real-time location system used to guide people through large buildings, keep track of unauthorized individuals within a high security environment and locate equipment. Microsoft said the WLAN infrastructure that already exists inside many businesses can be used to support Radar. Since Radar is software-based and uses existing wireless access points, no new hardware is required.

Microsoft is also licensing a WiFi network system called Choice. It can be used to deploy a new hotspot service or to complement an existing WiFi deployment, said the company.
