Apple MacBookAir

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Well its a new year and i have been remist in my blog activities…but honestly..there hasn’t been anything really that interesting talk about of late…..until recently that is… :-)

Apple introduces the MacBookAir (or the MBA as some folks call it).

This is a sweet portable laptop and as with all things Apple I wantie but can’t affordie. Need to find some deep pocket friends who can get me these things as “gifts”…keeping the ole friends of course… ;-) We digress. The MBA is weights in at only 3 pounds and is stated as the slimmest laptop out there right now. The catch? its all wireless. No optical drive, no network port. You want to install anything you either have to buy the external drive or setup remote drives on your PC and/or other laptop for access. Now, if you really think about it you really aren’t losing anything. I don’t use my network card on my laptop at home and the only time i use my optical drive is to burn dvds as backups and that’s on a scheduled basis once a week. Otherwise, I don’t use the thing. Another good feature that should be on all laptops is that the keyboards have a soft backlight. Very handy for the typist and nontypist alike when you are working in the dark. So the MBA is right the alley of most new age tech folks. Did we mention its a sweet ultra cool laptop? Mark my words, this will be the trend for laptops to come. Since we are not biased we have to look at the negative points as some people have been mentioning. The biggest one being the batterry “seems” to only be manufacture replacable so walking with a spare not going to help you here….this is yet to be completely confirmed. The good news is that the standard battery gives 5hrs of wi-fi roaming.

At $1800 you can definitely get a much more powerful laptop (even a MacBook Pro) but it won’t be as cool now would it :-)

Year End - 2007

Monday, December 31st, 2007

It is that time of year again - the time to reflect on what was, and to look towards the future on what can be. 2007 has been a challenging year for JamaicaFreeWifi and for each and every one of us. At the end of the day, what are we without challenges? Lets us welcome each challenge as they serve to make us better and stronger.

As we go about our daily lives throughout 2008, remember that we don’t have to wait until the end of the year to make our world a better place. It starts with those small actions today. Remember, all great journeys –like the years ahead of us – begin with the thought and that one single step.

Here is hoping that technology makes us better, we get wiser, and richer in every way.

JamaicaFreeWifi would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and we look forward to seeing you because this exciting journey has only just begun! Remember to look for us in your community in 2008.

Seasons Greetings!

To Vista or not to Vista?….That is the question!

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

We all love new technology. Either because we are trend setters or the tech is actually functional and it makes our lives easier - doesn’t matter - we love it. But lets be realistic - not many of us can’t afford the new tech or willing to be the guinea pig of the new tech. Which brings us to Microsoft Vista and the clamor that has existed to have this brand spanking new operating system and do away with the old XP.

Over the years it seems some people, mostly the techies, have wised up and realized that while it might be nice to run the beta or new operating system on a test PC at the office it might not be such a great idea to be running it for regular use. Since Vista’s release earlier this year a number of techies have ended up reverting from Vista to XP due to the alleged problems with lack of drivers, incompatible applications and general instability of the OS. We are now ten months into its release and a number of these issues have been resolved but others have rared their ugly head. It had gotten so bad that Microsoft had even allowed OEMS to sell laptops and PCs with both copies of XP and Vista just for those people who were getting too frustrated with Vista and its ailments and wanted “out” in a cost effective way (they didn’t have to buy XP). This very well might be the model that MS should adapt for future new releases of its Operating System but only time will tell.

There is every confidence that Vista will become as stable and reliable as XP after it has grown out of its toothing pains. In a few months it will have reached the ripe age of 1 year old and its first Service Pack will be not too far behind. However, it is obvious that the business sector in Jamaica and overseas will more than likely wait until then to consider widespread adoption of this new incarnation of Windows as its just too risky to do so at this point in time.

How many of us though are happily using Vista today and what are the stories of those who think its the operating system from hell. Let us know your thoughts and horror stories.
